I work in the special education department at Oakland School for the Arts in Oakland, CA. I work in a classroom setting, where I tutor and make sure the students are on task and focused. Because many of these students have learning or behavioral disabilities, I am often challenged with the question of how I can work to ensure that what I am teaching them will stay with them through their test or next class period. My workplace has several strengths and weaknesses. one strength would be the willingness of the staff to assist the students in all their educational tumbling blocks. One weakness may be that there are times when I feel the teachers are too nice to their students. I work with a small amount of students, but my mentor is planning on moving me to the arts education department in order to ensure i am meeting the amount of required hours. At the school there are several art programs taking place at once, so the environment is very artistic and intriguing. All of the staff have degrees in higher education. My mentor is currently studying to earn her PHD.
